In life, as in ballet, you just learn to live with pain, for it oddly and simply at the same time becomes normal to be in pain.

Main reason why ballet is an art, not a sport.

--Nothing in this world that's worth having comes easy.--

"Sleek hair pulled back, tricot, chiffon, satin,
tiny princess shoe, ribbons… Show, lights, music and audience… is there any profession with more fashion in it?"

"We hate on them sometimes for they figure but most of the time we want to change bodies with them. If you were ever practicing ballet or you are ballerina you meet pain that is required to be part of that society. Ballet is peaceful and painful at the same time. And image is sophistication."

"Dance enables you to lose yourself and find yourself all at once"

"It’s the closest to flying I’ ll ever get..."

This ad was found in an old Dance Magazine. It details several Repetto styles that are no longer made. Including a rare picture of the 212 Opera shoe.

The ankle joint consists of the true ankle joint and the subtalar joint. The true ankle joint is formed from the tibia, fibula, and talus, while the subtalar joint is formed from the talus and calcaneus. The true ankle joint allows dorsiflexion and plantar flexion, while the subtalar joint allows eversion and inversion. The ankle mortise is formed by the medial malleolus medially, the tibial plafond superiorly, and the lateral malleolus laterally.
Blisters are part of the everyday life of the dancer. They are a necessary part of the toughening process for the skin before corns and calluses form that allow weight bearing on the toes. Most dancers know how to manage them. For example, they might unroof a blister and use benzocaine (Benzodent) as a local anesthetic so that they can continue dancing with less pain.Calluses, like corns, are esse
ntial because they toughen the dancer’s feet. The dancer usually develops areas on the ball of the foot that resemble intractable plantar keratoses. Usually, they are not true keratoses because they are not painful; they are simply areas of concentrated weight bearing. Occasionally they need to be trimmed, but most dancers know how to do this.

A dancer’s foot is a unique structure, the result of years of endless training, classes, and barre exercises. It tends to be slightly cavus (at least the dancer wishes it were, even if it is not) with a rounded arch. It has thickened metatarsals to support body weight for dancing on the ball of the foot (demipointe), and calluses on appropriate areas where the skin needs to be tough in order to dance en pointe in toe shoes. Indeed, this toughness of skin and bone is necessary for its normal function, and blisters and metatarsal stress fractures occur when the necessary toughness is not present.

Dorsiflexion is the motion the ankle joint makes when the foot points upward.
Plantarflexion is the motion the ankle joint makes when the toes point downward.

The 90 degrees of dorsiflexion needed in the dancer’s first metatarsophalangeal joint.

Real, worn, pointe shoes that felt pain, felt frustration, were touched by divinity, were carried by passion and experienced the joy of dance...

Dancers have a remarkable ability to tolerate pain in the feet and toes. They often develop elaborate systems to control discomfort so that they can continue dancing.
